Today, Saturday, the eighth of December, members of civil society in Bamyan and the people of Bamyan held a demonstration featuring political sarcasm. They presented a mock President Karzai with a trophy for fighting corruption. The reason for the trophy trophy was for the recent announcement that Afghanistan won first place as the most corrupt country in the world.
The people held this protest because last week the International Transparency Group declared Afghanistan to be the most corrupt government in the whole world.
Those people involved in civil society in Bamyan also gave a lantern to the mock Karzai because they are unhappy with the government due to the fact that Bamyan still lacks a state source of electricity. The lantern has been used as a symbol by the people since the first time they demonstrated against the Ministry of Energy and Water, claiming they are not working for the needs of Bamyan. The people of Bamyan have been demanding electricity in this way since 2009.
Dawood Wassl, one of the civil society activists in Bamyan, was the driving force behind this particular program.  He said “As you know, at this moment, 200 meters behind me, people are still living in caves in the 21st century. These caves were made 2,000 years ago. All ministers, when they travel, are spending millions of dollars. If they used the money they spent during just one night of travel, they could provide housing for all of those living in the caves.”
Also he added: “Ismail Khan, the Minister of Energy and Water, when meeting representatives from throughout Afghanistan, claimed to have made three electricity projects in Bamyan. We don’t see the results of any of these projects in Bamyan. Doesn’t this sound like corruption?”
“Bamyan is one of the poorest province in all of Afghanistan. The people of Bamyan are therefore very much against the government., because it hasn’t made any notable improvements in the province.”
In 2009, the Bamyan civil society activists first started to demonstrate their grievances to the government.  At this time, they placed mud on the roads to show that sufficient attention had not been giving to the need for paved roads in Bamyan. They also presented a medal of honor for the donkeys’ service in Bamyan. Without reliable water sources, people in Bamyan rely upon the labor of donkeys to carry buckets of water from rivers and streams for use in homes.
